We are not sure if you have met with Adrian Ghenie or seen his paintings. He is quite famous, but if you are not following figurative or abstract works of art, you may not know about him. Adrian Ghenie is a Romanian artist currently working both in Cluj and Berlin. He is a really productive artist, and that is what makes him so special. The artist reflects historical states of mind and a dark personality.

The Early Life of the Artist

The artist was born in 1977 in a city northwest of Romania called Baia Mare. Adrian studied art at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca. He worked for a while as an artist in Vienne and Sicily. Later, he established Gleria Plan B with Mihai Pop. It was 2005 when the two artists started their own art gallery. It was only three years after that Adrian and Mihai opened their second space in Berlin.

The Technique of the Artist

The Romanian artist borrows his art style from the dramatic chiaroscuro (light-dark) of Renaissance painting to the experimentations with texture and surface of Abstract Expressionists. The artist does not use a brush. Instead, he uses a palette knife, which is the basis of Adrian Ghenie’s technique. He pours and drips paint and makes broad marks with a knife on the surface. The result combines figurative and realistic elements as well as varying degrees of abstraction and fragmentation. In fact, both his fans and critics compare his works with 16th-century British artist Francis Bacon.

On Social Media

The Romanian artist currently has over 35,000 followers on Instagram. He shares his artwork on social media frequently as well. Therefore, if you want to hear about his latest works, his exhibitions, or more personal things, you can follow him. It is also great to see other people’s interpretations of the paintings.
