When planing your garden layout and trying to correct the planting space and you do not have enough space for all the plants you wish to have, try going vertical. This project will bring to you that extra space you need for gardening and planting. The tower only needs an investment of about $200 to build, and a bit of time (approximately 16 hours).
You will need: gravel; dirt; 1 – 4″ X 4″ X 6′ Cedar Wood – for main center post; 1 – 3′ X 3′ plywood – base; 1 – 2″ X 2″ X 8′ cedar wood – top; 1 – container wood glue; 4 – casters – bottom wheels; 11 – 1″ X 4″ X 8′ cedar wood – for the structure; 75 – 1 1/2″ deck screws. Directions: For making your tower last for more than 3 seasons, we recommend you varnish the plywood and also add a layer of gravel and rocks under the dirt to help with the water drainage. Cut the wood and secure the main base structure using wood glue and screws. When the glue is dry, mount the wheels on the base structure. In the pictures you can see the soil holding boards cut to size. Cut the angles of the soil holding boards to the required mitered angles. Glue the 2×2 cedar pieces on the top of the tower. Attach the first board for holding the garden soil in place and pour the first load of dirt in it. Continue adding the cedar boards from bottom to top and fill them with dirt. This might take some time. Remember it is easier for you to add the dirt as you progress upwards. On the very top of the garden, add an automatic irrigation system. Now you can plant anything you need from Strawberries to Lettuce.
